
Edie Irwin has been baking and cooking her whole life. When her son was found to have food allergies, Edie focused on baking with low-gluten whole grains such as spelt and kamut. Her breads caught the attention of Bob Goldberg and his partner Paul Lewin, owners of Follow Your Heart restaurant/market and makers of Vegenaise and other vegan and vegetarian products. Edie began working with Bob to adapt her bread recipes for use at their restaurant. During this process, Bob and Paul were presented with the opportunity to buy The Sensitive Baker, a gluten-and-dairy-free bakery founded by Sandee Heir and located in Culver City, CA. Building on their relationship, they asked Edie and her husband Dan to become partners with them in the bakery. Excited to make a career change (both were graphic designers by profession), Edie and Dan partnered with Bob and Paul, and The Sensitive Baker joined the Follow Your Heart family in November 2010.
Together, Edie and Dan developed The Sensitive Baker into one of the premier gluten-free bakeries in the country. Edie is the creative heart of the bakery, using skills honed over a lifetime of baking to develop a wide variety of delicious gluten-free baked goods, from breads to desserts; we also offer a growing selection of vegan products. Dan handles day-to-day management and sales and marketing. Bob and Paul provide strategic and logistical support.
On January 1, 2012, in order to emphacize the bakery's ties to Follow Your Heart, the partners changed the name of the bakery to Rising Hearts Bakery.
We are primarily a gluten-and-dairy-free bakery, but also try to limit our use of other allergens. Using traditional gluten-free ingredients and drawing on a growing number of allergen-free ingredients now becoming available, we strive to provide our customers with the best tasting and highest quality products possible. Our goal is to make products that are not just "good for gluten-free" but just plain good. To serve our growing number of vegan customers, we are also working on developing egg-free (vegan) version of our most popular products. We are working on sugar-free options as well.
We currently operate our retail store in Culver City, CA and a wholesale facility in Canoga Park, CA.
