Dan’s first blog post (finally!)

Greetings. I’m Dan, Edie’s husband. I have been struggling to figure out exactly what I can contribute to this blog. Although we own a gluten-and-dairy -free bakery, I have no food allergies. And anyways, there are already many bloggers out there who are far more knowledgeable about the gf life than I.

But, there are not a lot of folks who have had the opportunity to make a complete mid-life career change as I have. Before we bought the bakery, I was a graphic designer (I still do some design work). But the economy took a huge bite out of my business, and after 25 years I was ready for a change. When the opportunity came to buy the bakery with some experienced partners, we took a gamble and made the change. So, I have had to learn an entire new career from the ground up.

Edie is the baker, so while I know my way around the kitchen, I’ll largely leave the baking stuff to her. What I can, and will, talk about in my posts will have less to do with gluten-free baking and more to do with what it’s like to start a new career in the food world, and all the things that go along with it…learning where and how to source ingredients, learning all about kosher laws, labeling, distribution, costing, pricing, marketing…all things that have been new to me, and hopefully will be interesting to you.

Edie and I have long been fascinated and peripherally involved in the world of food and food production. I love reading and learning about foods. I love to read food writers books, chef’s bios and travel logs. I watch all kinds of food documentaries. So, I will also share these random food-related topics. Maybe some of them will spark your interest as well.

Hey, the Rising Hearts Bakery blog has begun!!!!

GF Kitchen Sink Cookies.

This is Edie, posting the first one. I love the idea of a blog! The reasons to blog are numerous – but frankly, I need a clone! The bakery is like a child always in need of more. A holiday needs fun treats, a client needs new recipes, an employee needs help with holes in the bread. I just don’t need one more thing to do… but, I have come to the realization that a blog is super important.

So many people have questions! Customers want to know what gluten free baking entails – this will be my area of expertise. I am the one who makes the recipes. It’s the fun part! I love creating new recipes and the ins and outs of how to overcome the GF obstacles. These are the answers we can give in the blog. Dan will be blogging too – with his side of the bakery – the front end.

A little about me – I am a woman of many interests. I have a BFA in Graphic Design from CSULB. I was a professional designer for years before becoming a MOM. Yes, all caps is on purpose…. Being a MOM, became my life for a while, as I had 3 kids in 4 years (wheee!!!) I was fully engrossed in attachment parenting, developmental milestones, cooperative preschools and kids with allergies (many of you know that one!) After 10 years or so, I began hosting an organic vegetable CSA pickup site (Abundant Harvest Organics) in my neighborhood and baking bread. All kinds of bread. Bread my kids could eat! Healthy, hearty, whole grain breads that are real food – not just a vehicle for peanut butter and jelly. And that slowly got me to the point I am now.

My life is still super busy – bakery, 3 kids, home school (algebra!), 27 chickens… but I will blog and share that now with some of you.

Teaser for next blog – in the store later this month… my new recipe for NO RICE (!) Multigrain Bread.
